This simple exercise below will give you some experience in choosing and arranging symbols on a textile template. The centre field surrounded by a double border is the area to hold the symbols. There are multiples of each. Black has been included as a solid square, although the "real" Telia Rumal double ikat cloth does not have any solid colour squares. It can be easier to arrange symbols with the plain squares separating the motifs. You will see if it is harder to find a harmonious arrangement when one motif adjoins the next.

What are some of the considerations that make for compatible groupings?

This template requires a 4 X 4 arrangement of motifs. Others will have 5, 6, or more. On rare occasion there will a design with a single medallion type motif.

Start by arranging motifs in piles to the right of template
Click on a motif to move and place it in position. It there is a problem with a motif sticking to the pointer when released, just double-click and it will release.
